Gabrielle Nankivell

An avid maker, performer, educator and collaborator, Gabrielle has spent over a decade creating and performing for a worldwide audience. Her goal is to ignite the imagination of audiences and create continuing avenues of dialogue on the topic of performance.

Gabrielle’s choreographic work has been presented in 10 countries across 3 continents. She was also co-founder/co-director of the project company OX (Belgium/Slovenia) with Jurij Konjar from 2003-2007.

2011 saw Gabrielle tour her solo work I left my shoes on warm concrete and stood in the rain nationally through Mobile States, produced by Performing Lines. She also created new works for Adelaide College of the Arts and Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Upcoming projects include The Funeral Tree, a new work for 6 performers, and creative collaborations on works for Daniel Jaber, Windmill Theatre and photographer Chris Herzfeld.

Gabrielle’s performance credits with renowned international companies and artists include Ultima Vez/Wim Vandekeybus (Belgium), Alexander Baervoets (Belgium), Aaben Dans/Thomas Eisenhardt (Denmark), Raul Maia (Portugal), Thomas Steyaert (Belgium), Pierre Wyss (Germany), Splintergroup/Animal Farm Collective (Australia/Germany) & Australian Dance Theatre amongst others.

Alongside her performance work, Gabrielle leads classes and workshops for companies and training institutions in improvisation, performance practice, contemporary technique in both Europe and Australia. Gabrielle also holds a foundation level teaching certificate in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and regularly teaches both Vinyasa Flow classes and Yoga + Movement Improvisation classes.

Gabrielle is a 2007-10 SCOPE recipient (Australia Council for the Arts & Australian Institute of Sport), has twice held a scholarship to the Impulstanz festival in Vienna (2001,2005) and has been awarded a Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship by Arts Management Australia (1999).

Gabrielle completed formal training with Jacqueline Tucker in Adelaide, holds a Bachelor of Dance from the Victorian College of the Arts, completed a Graduate Certificate in Arts (Writing) through Swinburne University, is currently continuing her Masters studies in Writing and is mentored daily by the world around her.
